About the Long Brown Path

Welcome to my blog, which contains accounts of my adventures in the mountains and on the roads, as well as stories and essays on a variety of themes — minimalism, transcendentalism, the importance of nature, the impact of technology.  The name, “Long Brown Path,” is borrowed from the title of Raymond Torrey’s popular column in the New York Post, which ran from 1919 to 1938.  Torrey, who was one of the founders of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, got the name from the first stanza of Walt Whitman’s poem, “Song of the Open Road.”

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.
